Danica Patrick's Drive To Win The Indy 500

by Bodog Sportsbook | May 22 2008

Danica Patrick
Danica Patrick is looking to take on legendary status of epic proportions as she prepares to race for the checkered flag of the Indy 500.

Danica’s Drive

Despite having recorded only one IndyCar race in her tenure as a driver, that one race won at Twin Ring Motegi in the Indy Japan 300 made Danica Patrick the first woman to ever win an IndyCar race, which in itself is an amazing feat. Before winning her first race, Danica Patrick was already a household name. She has been marketed and promoted through almost every aspect of the media and her tough demeanor and sexy good looks have catapulted her to superstar status. Patrick has graced the pages of Sports Illustrated and is also a CoverGirl. But being sexy isn’t going to win her the Indy 500. Her racing skills just might. Patrick is currently on the pole in fifth position. If she is going to pull off what might be the biggest win of all time for any driver, given the fact that this is IndyCar’s biggest and most prestigious event, she’s put herself in good position to pull it off, but she will have her work cut out for her. The competition is fierce.

Indy 500 Contenders

Scott Dixon currently sits on top of the pole and will have the No. 1 position on Sunday. But you can’t count anyone out of this race. A.J. Foyt, Dan Wheldon, Ryan Briscoe, Helio Castroneves and Marco Andretti are just some of the contenders that are thirsty for that Brickyard milk. Briscoe, Castroneves and Dixon all finished in the top five last year; Patrick started and finished in eighth.

Let’s stop and think about what it might actually mean if Patrick can pull this win off. We are talking about media coverage and attention going through the roof for IndyCar, which will mean serious dough rolling in. We are talking about arguably the greatest win ever by anybody in anything. Too far? Okay, maybe. But think about it. The Indy 500 has been in existence for 92 years. It has been won by racing legends of our time. Up until less than a month ago, a woman had never won an IndyCar race. Point blank, if Patrick wins the Indy 500, we are talking female Athlete of the Year; yeah, it’s racing, but count it. We are talking about contention for female Athlete of the Decade, and we are talking about one of the greatest achievements one person can do for their gender and sport in the last century. Put simply, with so much more attention being garnered towards NASCAR, smart money says Indy needs this to happen more than Patrick does.
