Welcome to the last Stat Check of 2008. We kick off this weekend’s list of eight football stats and factoids (downsized from 10 – we’re including Friday’s bowl games to keep up this week) with this gem from the annals of history: Michigan won the first Rose Bowl 49-0 over the Stanford Cardinal to end the 1901 season 11-0, outscoring their opponents 550-0. Stanford conceded the game with eight minutes left to play.
College Football
Mississippi vs. Texas Tech: In 2006, Ole Miss QB Jevan Snead was Colt McCoy’s backup in Texas when the Longhorns (-10) beat the Red Raiders 35-31. Snead did not put up any numbers in that game; he transferred to Ole Miss and sat out last year before making his Rebels debut.
East Carolina vs. Kentucky: The Wildcats are tied for No. 98 in the FBS with 10 passing touchdowns, and tied for No. 63 with 18 rushing TDs. East Carolina’s strong defense is No. 31 in the nation at 20.8 points allowed per game and No. 37 with a passer rating allowed of 115.91.
Utah vs. Alabama: Alabama LT and Outland Trophy winner Andre Smith has been suspended from the Sugar Bowl, reportedly after alleged improper contact with a sports agent. Tide QB John Parker Wilson is a righty, so he won’t have the best tackle in the nation guarding his blindside against Utah. However, the Utes are only No. 77 in the FBS with 21 sacks.
Buffalo vs. Connecticut: Buffalo coach Turner Gill played his entire professional career in Canada. Gill was the quarterback for the CFL’s Montreal Concordes in 1984-85. Saturday’s International Bowl takes place at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, which didn’t open until 1989 – the same year Gill began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater of Nebraska.

NFL Football
Atlanta at Arizona: The over is 15-3 in Arizona’s last 18 games against winning teams. This is a combination of the QB heroics of Kurt Warner (57 TD passes the last two seasons) and a porous Cardinals defense that was No. 28 in points allowed this year and No. 27 last year.
Indianapolis at San Diego: The Colts finished the 2008 regular season with only six passing TDs allowed, breaking the old NFL record of nine set by Denver in 1978 and matched by Pittsburgh in 1990. Two of those TD passes were by San Diego’s Philip Rivers in Indy’s 23-20 victory in Week 12.
Baltimore at Miami: The Ravens set a franchise record this year with 20 rushing touchdowns, two more than they scored in 2003. They also had 132 first downs on the ground, beating the team record of 116 set by the 2000 Ravens who went on to win the Super Bowl.
Philadelphia at Minnesota: The Vikings reached the 10-win plateau for the first time since 2000, when they went 11-5 (8-8 ATS) in their first year with Daunte Culpepper at quarterback. That team won its Divisional game over New Orleans before losing 41-0 to the Giants in the NFC title game.
