The screaming Russian made an early exit to a chorus of boos from the French Open crowd
Tennis French Open Update
First of all, there are no Americans left in the Open. Both of the Williams sisters made their exit on day six of the tournament. It shouldn't come as a major surprise that Venus Williams lost to Flavia Pennetta. Venus dominates on grass courts, not clay. She’s also been eliminated in the third round in three of the last four years.
Serena Williams' upset in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Katarina Srebotnik is the one that shocked people. Previous to this match, Katarina had lost to Serena three times. Come face-off day of 2008’s French Open, however, Serena was out of sorts and missing all chances to turn things around. This win marks the second of 10 times that Katarina has made it into the last 16 of the French Open. So while Katarina was jumping for joy, Serena probably couldn’t have been happier to leave Paris given the luck she's had at Roland Garros in previous years.
The last American male to be ousted from the French Open was Robby Ginepri who lost to 24th-ranked Fernando Gonzalez in the fourth round.
Besides the lack of American representation, there were many other upsets that are the talk of the town. Maria Sharapova was dethroned from her No. 1 spot when she lost to 13th-ranked Dinara Safina in the fourth round. The fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko lost to 28th-ranked Ivan Ljubicic.
With Sharapova out and the No. 1 spot open, the battle continues between second-ranked Ana Ivanovic and third-ranked Jelena Jankovic. Ivanovic was the favorite for many reasons. Firstly, she and Jankovic have played six matches and Ivanovic has won five of them. Secondly, Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova beat Ivanovic out of previous Grand Slam finals, but with them out of the picture, Ivanovic was looking to take over. And that she did, knocking off Jankovic in a thrilling semifinal match and will now meet Dinara Safina for the French Open title.
As for the men, it looks like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will inevitably face off if they win their matches against Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils, respectively. If the battle comes down to Nadal and Federer, will Federer be able to take down the King of the French Open? Nadal is the three-time defending champion and a clay-court magician. Federer, on the other hand, will be playing his heart out for the only major title he has yet to win.
