Another day, another UFC card at Mandalay Bay. The top MMA organization in the world is in Las Vegas this Saturday for the third time in four PPV events; UFC 109 brings us an interesting card headlined by two 40-something ex-Heavyweight champions in Randy Couture and Mark Coleman. As you’ve no doubt heard by now, these guys are so old that they were scheduled to fight at UFC 17, way back in 1998 when the crowds were literally one-tenth as big as today.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t some fight left in both men. Couture has been written off a few times already in his storied career, only to come back with yet another victory. His most recent was a very close shave against Brandon Vera at UFC 105, each judge scoring the bout 29-28 in favor of the veteran even though Vera had the better of Couture on the mat. Coleman’s win over Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100 was much less controversial, but it’s highly debatable whether Coleman can keep up with Couture’s supreme level of conditioning.
The rest of the main card features a battle between Nate Marquardt and Chael Sonnen that should determine the next challenger to Middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Both Marquardt (primarily a striker) and Sonnen (a grappler) are fairly one-dimensional, but Marquardt has studied enough wrestling to take advantage of this situation. We’ve also got the enigmatic Paulo Thiago against the highly skilled Mike Swick, whose fundamentals should keep him out of harm’s way this Saturday.
